Capabilities

What you can plan

Choose the mode that fits: technical, rebreather or recreational diving. Below is what you can set and which results you can review.

Terms, in plain words

  • 01Technical open-circuit (OC) diving

Set depth, time and multilevel stops; add bottom and deco gases and let switches follow MOD. In open circuit, exhaled gas is released into the water.

    Details

DecoPlan builds the open-circuit profile from the depth and bottom time you enter; add levels when the dive changes depth in stages rather than forcing one square profile. Then add the bottom gas and deco gases with the mix from your analyser, and the planner sets the switches by MOD. Choose the decompression model and gradient factors that match your computer and your team's convention, enter your own working SAC and reserve, and read the ascent shape, the deco stops and the gas left at the end.

  • 02Rebreather (CCR) and bailout gas

Set loop setpoints and the diluent, then plan a separate open-circuit bailout for a failure at the worst point of the dive.

    Details

A CCR plan is two plans in one place: the loop you intend to dive and the open-circuit exit you hope never to need. Set the bottom and ascent setpoints, add a low setpoint on the descent if your plan uses one, and define the diluent, because it affects both the loop and the bailout picture. List the bailout cylinders as a separate gas supply, then check bailout for a failure at the deepest or most distant point the plan allows. If the numbers are tight, shorten the dive or add gas before the dive.

  • 03Recreational no-decompression dives

Depth, time, air or nitrox, the no-deco limit, oxygen partial pressure at depth and the gas left after the dive.

    Details

Enter the planned depth and bottom time; the planner shows the no-decompression limit for that profile. Use air or nitrox with the mix from your analyser and check the ppO₂ at depth, since the number matters more than the label on the cylinder. Add your SAC and the cylinder you will carry to see how much gas remains after the dive, then keep that remainder as a reserve rather than as time to spend.

    Open the recreational lesson
  • 04Gas sized to your plan

Your SAC, cylinders and reserve drive the totals, so the gas picture reflects you rather than a default.

    Details

The gas picture is built from your SAC, the cylinders you list and the reserve you set, not from a default. That is why the totals reflect the diver and the plan rather than a generic figure. Enter realistic working values instead of optimistic ones, and read the gas left at the end against the profile, the deco stops and the reserve you intend to keep.

  • 05Cave Atlas inside

Browse cave entries and source notes without leaving the planner. Demo values are context; replace them with measurements.

    Details

Cave Atlas is reference content inside DecoPlan. Browse cave entries and their source notes without leaving the planner, and inspect a reference plan before you build your own route. The demo distances and depths are reference material, not measurements: replace them with measured values before planning. Cave Atlas is not a navigation map and does not replace a survey or a team briefing.

  • 06Plan on your platform

The iOS app and the web planner are available. Direct Android and macOS builds are listed on this page.

    Details

DecoPlan is available as the iOS app and as the public web planner at decoplan.dvpdnsca.org. Direct APK for Android and macOS builds are listed in the download section of this page; Google Play is not required. Choose the platform you will actually plan on and get the current file from that section, because the manifest is the source of truth for current file names.

Glossary

Terms, in plain words

Short definitions for the words used on this page. They describe concepts, not limits or recommendations.

Open circuit (OC)Definition

You breathe gas from a cylinder and exhale it into the water.

CCR (closed-circuit rebreather)Definition

A rebreather keeps exhaled gas in a loop, removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen, so most of the gas is reused.

BailoutDefinition

A separate open-circuit gas supply used to reach the exit if the rebreather fails.

DiluentDefinition

The gas mixed into the loop to dilute oxygen and set the loop volume and composition.

SetpointDefinition

The target oxygen partial pressure for a CCR loop. It is a pressure target, not a percentage of oxygen.

SACDefinition

In DecoPlan and DecoPlan Cave this is your breathing gas consumption referenced to surface pressure, in litres per minute. At depth, consumption also depends on ambient pressure.

MODDefinition

The depth limit for a gas at the oxygen partial pressure selected for it.

ppO2Definition

Oxygen partial pressure: the oxygen fraction multiplied by the ambient pressure. It is not the same as the oxygen percentage.

NDLDefinition

The time at depth without mandatory decompression stops under the selected model. It is not a safety guarantee.

GFDefinition

Two factors that adjust how conservative a Bühlmann model is. A larger value is not automatically safer; the values are chosen to match the plan and the computer.

Task tutorials

Choose what you want to do

Pick the job in front of you. Each lesson follows the app's own workflow; the text works on its own, and the matching animated clip is still in production.

The app is the software you install. The lessons below are website teaching material, not app screens. Watch finished videos in the lessons. Any video still in preparation is labelled.

Tasks

01 Plan an open-circuit technical dive Text + clip

A technical open-circuit plan starts with the shape of the dive, then adds gases and conservatism. Work in that order and the gas numbers have something real to stand on.

  1. Set depth and time. Enter the bottom depth and bottom time. If the dive changes depth in stages, add levels rather than forcing everything into one square profile.
  2. Add the gases. Enter the bottom gas and deco gases with the mix from your analyser. The planner sets switches by MOD, so the mix and the planned depth stay consistent.
  3. Choose the model and gradient factors. Use the decompression model and gradient factors that match your computer and your team's convention. Keep them visible; they are part of the plan, not a hidden setting.
  4. Enter SAC and reserve. Your consumption and reserve determine whether the plan is actually carryable. Use your own working SAC, not an optimistic number.
  5. Read the profile and the gas totals. Check the ascent shape, the deco stops and the gas left at the end. If the plan only works on paper, change the plan before the dive.

This lesson describes planning software. It is not a dive course, a schedule or a substitute for training and team procedure.

02 Plan a CCR dive and its bailout Text + clip

A rebreather plan is two plans: the loop you intend to dive and the open-circuit exit you hope never to use. DecoPlan keeps them in the same place.

  1. Set the setpoints. Enter the bottom and ascent setpoints. If your plan uses a low setpoint on the descent, add it there rather than assuming it.
  2. Define the diluent. Choose the diluent for the loop. It affects the loop and the bailout picture, so it belongs in the plan from the start.
  3. Add bailout cylinders. List the open-circuit gas you would need to reach the exit. Treat the bailout as a separate gas supply, not as spare loop volume.
  4. Test the worst moment. Check bailout for a failure at the deepest or most distant point your plan allows. A bailout that works only on the way home is not a bailout.
  5. Review the whole exit. Read the bailout ascent and gas totals against your team's procedure. If the numbers are tight, shorten the dive or add gas before you get wet.

Bailout planning is safety-critical. Follow your certification, unit and team procedures; this page cannot validate them.

Text + clip The animated clip is available above; the text steps remain below for reference.

03 Plan a recreational no-decompression dive Text + clip

Recreational planning should be quick without being vague. Set the dive, check the mix and leave with a clear gas picture.

  1. Set depth and time. Enter the planned depth and bottom time. The planner shows the no-decompression limit for the profile.
  2. Choose the mix. Use air or nitrox with the mix from your analyser. Check the ppO₂ at depth next to it; the number matters more than the label on the cylinder.
  3. Add your SAC and cylinder. Enter your consumption and the cylinder you will carry. The planner shows how much gas remains after the dive.
  4. Keep a reserve. Treat the remaining gas as a reserve, not as time to spend. Plan the ascent and exit with the reserve intact.
  5. Sanity-check the plan. Compare the profile, NDL and gas against your training and the day's conditions. Software supports the decision; it does not make it.

This is a description of the planning workflow. It is not a dive schedule or a substitute for training.

Text + clip The animated clip is available above; the text steps remain below for reference.

04 Choose your planner Text + clip

DecoPlan plans dive profiles. DecoPlan Cave is a separate route and gas planner.

  1. Choose the task. Use DecoPlan for the dive profile and DecoPlan Cave for a cave route and gas.
  2. Find the reference. Cave Atlas is reference inside both apps. The voice project is still in development.

Two separate planners; the reference and voice project have different roles.

Text + clip The animated clip is available above; the text steps remain below for reference.

05 One Mac installer per app Text + clip

Each app has one universal Mac installer for Intel and Apple Silicon, macOS 14 or later.

  1. Choose the app. Download DecoPlan or DecoPlan Cave from its own download section.
  2. Choose one Mac file. The universal installer supports Intel and Apple Silicon. macOS 14 or later is required.

The two apps have separate installers. Android availability is listed separately.
